Modern Foreign Languages
|
 |
The Modern Languages Department is a very popular department whose mission is to promote
the learning and enjoyment of languages. We offer taught courses in French, Italian and
Spanish but it is also possible to take a GCSE in other European Languages.
For older students, we offer AS and A2 French and Italian and Fast track GCSE Spanish.
We organise Exchanges to France and Italy and a day visit to Boulogne.
We celebrate cultural diversity through Languages Day in September and Flexible Friday
programmes.
Our lessons focus on communicating through a range of interactive activities including
role play, computer activities and games.
We are located on the first floor to the left of the main entrance.

Year 8
|
|
In Year 8, all students continue with either French or Italian – the language they
started in Year 7, but they will be placed in one of two bands. Students will continue
to develop their four skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
|
|
Year 9
|
|
All students in the A band will continue with a language and will have a choice of either
French, Italian or Spanish. B band students will be able to choose to continue with a
language after consultation with their teachers. Some students who have chosen Italian
or Spanish will be able to work towards the French GCSE as well in an after-school class.
All three languages lead to the new AQA GCSE at the end of Year 10. The content for all
three languages is similar.
In Year 9, the topics studied are:
Lifestyle - Health
- Healthy and unhealthy lifestyles
- The consequences of lifestyle choices
Relationships

Free time and the Media

Towards the end of Year 9, there will be the opportunity to do the first piece of course
work and/or the speaking exam. Both will be done under exam conditions and as they will
be marked by the exam board it will not be possible to give estimations of possible
grades or comment upon how students have done. This is in line with the new GCSE
regulations for Languages.

|
MFL Homework
|
|
Pupils need to complete these and have their parent sign to show that it has been
completed. ICT work can be e-mailed, handed in to the teacher on a memory stick, or
printed out and handed in.
The finished piece of work must then be handed in to the class teacher by the date set
below. In addition, there will be a number of smaller learning or written home work
tasks which will be set on a weekly basis.
Where the student is asked to learn for homework, the expectation is that the student
will have learnt the words in class and at home. The techniques which were used for
learning spellings in the Partner Primary schools can be applied to learning spellings in
Languages e.g. look, cover, write, check.
