Art Ethos
|
|
The Art department at St Joseph's Catholic College looks to develop pupil's creativity
and imagination through gaining Skills, Knowledge and Understanding of the subject.
Each students work is:
- underpinned by observational drawing
- taught a wide variety of skills from painting to printmaking
- given the opportunity to produce 3D work
- given the opportunity to express their views and feelings though their work

Art Course Outlines

Year 7
|
Still Life drawing is undertaken at the start of the year to develop observation skills
and visual skills. This develops into colour theory and painting. Year 7s then take a
cultural adventure into Aboriginal and African pattern inspired fabric printing. The
final project looks at Gothic Architecture with students modelling gargoyles from clay.

Year 8
|
|
Year 8 starts with observational drawing focusing on developing their use of line and
tone. This culminates in a mixed media piece. In their second project they learn about
perspective and the work of Patrick Caulfield. The end product of this is a design for
an interior that develops creativity and imagination. An eastern mask project finishes
the year as they look at Chinese and Japanese influences to decorate a mask.

Year 9
|
|
As part of the expressive arts carrousel Year 9 complete a unit within the art
department. This is part of a popular culture theme, with our focus being on Street Art.
It consists of examining artist manifestos and political statements and progresses into
designing and painting. Students are given a choice of styles to work in giving them a
chance to express their ideas and feelings.

The GCSE exam board in AQA; this is delivered through 4 units:

Year 7
Still Life Homework
|
- Draw an item from your kitchen in pencil
- Produce an A4 research page on Cezanne: (A good research page includes a title, 5
facts, 2 pictures and you must attempt to copy some detail from one of the pictures)
- Collage an A4 page in your sketchbook in Complimentary colours; use a pattern to
break the colours up

Culture Pattern and Print Homework
|
- Research African Prints. When you have found your favourite reproduce it on a page
in your sketchbook. You may use paint or colouring pencils.
- Research African or Aboriginal art
- Find out about African Adrinka or Aboriginal symbols
- Find an African or Aboriginal textile your like and produce this pattern on an A4
page in your sketchbook

Gargoyles Homework
|
- Produce a research page on Gargoyles. (A good research page includes a title, 5
facts, 2 pictures and you must attempt to copy some detail from one of the pictures)
- Draw yourself pulling a frightening face
- Collage eyes noses and mouths together that you have found in magazines to make a
scary, gargoyle like image

Year 8
Still Life Homework
|
- Draw a metal spoon, fill the page and add all the tones and details
- Find the image Giorgio Morandi - Large Still Life with Coffeepot, 1933, copy
this into your sketchbook. Fill the whole page.
- Produce a research Page on Giorgio Morandi

Interiors and Perspective Homework
|
- Research interior design – use visuals
- Complete an artist research page based on one of the artists your teacher shows you
- Collect materials to use in your collage
|

Eastern Masks
|
- Produce a page of work on Japanese or Chinese mask designs
- Find out your name in Japanese or Chinese letters and produce this in your art book
- Draw a self portrait

Year 9
Street Art Homework
|
- Collect 4 Street Art images
- Produce a research page on Banksy
