Welcome to the Sixth Form
|
|
|
I sat and thought about what meaningful welcome I could write to you all. I thought back
to the dim distant past and tried to remember the messages from my Head of Year and if I
read them. I of course read them, made detailed notes and acted on any advice given - I
am sure you will all do the same!
Seriously however, this is the start of a very exciting time for all of us. We have the
privilege of being in a brand new state-of-the-art college. Some are starting new
courses and all of us are looking to the future and what that holds for us. No longer in
compulsory education, your choices will determine your future as you mature into young
responsible adults
During your time in the Sixth Form, Mrs Carter, your tutors, your teachers and I will
take a genuine interest in your progress and be there to support you and advise you. We
will also encourage you to become independent young people able to make informed
decisions, understand the consequences of these decisions and be able to support fellow
students when it is needed.
Your time at St Joseph's Catholic College is not just about academic success but also
offers opportunities to do a wide range of community service both within the college and
outside the college. I am keen to ensure the Sixth Form becomes an integral and
invaluable part of the St Joseph's Catholic College community where Sixth Form students
help to make the college successful and move it forward.
Overall my advice to all of you is work hard, respect each other and enjoy!
Clare Bailey
Assistant Head in charge of Sixth Form

UCAS Information
|
|
UCAS stands for the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. Most
applications for places on Higher Education courses are made through UCAS. The process
starts in the spring term of Year 12 with a visit to the Higher Education Convention at
Bath University where you can talk to representatives of universities and colleges. In
the summer term of Year 12, after the exams, you will be putting together a Personal
Statement for your UCAS form, with the aid of your tutor. It is important to research
courses and universities early and there will be university open days to attend if you
wish. In the autumn term of Year 13 you will be set a deadline for completing your UCAS
form and sending it off. St Joseph's uses the on-line Electronic Application System.
All the information needed to help you to do this is available in the Sixth Form Study
area and Mrs Bailey and Mrs Carter are available to support you.

Art Foundation Courses
Students hoping to embark on a Foundation Course must consult Mrs Harris, Head of
Expressive Arts, early in the autumn term of Year 13, and she will guide them through the
application process.

Your Role as a Sixth Former
|
|
Our Sixth Form students play an important role in the community life of the
college. It is therefore expected that they will attend and be involved in
our gatherings for college masses and services.
Sixth Formers are expected to dress and behave in a manner appropriate to a
working environment, and to set a good example to younger students as they
move about the college. Bad language is unacceptable, as are eating and
drinking outside designated areas, running, shouting, dropping litter and
chewing gum.
Unacceptable fashions include the following:
- Hair colours unknown in nature
- No.1 clipper cuts
- Bare midriffs
- Garments displaying slogans deemed by staff to be offensive
- Wearing hats or caps
- Excessive piercings

The Common Room Committee
Each tutor group in Year 12 and Year 13 elects two students to represent it on the Common
Room Committee, which meets to discuss matters of interest or concern to the Sixth Form.
These students are responsible for managing the Common Room Fund which is used to provide
activities and additional items for students in their Common Room.
The Common Room
Music and table football may be played at break and lunchtime but not during lesson
times. The Common Room is a communal area for all the Sixth Form and it is therefore
important to respect it by putting all your litter in the waste bins. If you spill a
drink, ask for something to mop it up with.

Counselling and Advice
From time to time students may want to talk through a particular issue with someone other
than a parent/guardian, friend or teacher. Liz Jarrett, the College Nurse, comes into
college on a regular basis and holds Sessions when students can just drop in to see her.
You can also make an appointment to see her.
Other contacts that may be able to help you:
- The Teacher Listening Service
- Connections - Youth Counselling Service - 695255
- Druglink - Drug Advisory Centre - 610133
- Child and Family Consultation Services - 428800
- Swindon Family Mediation Service - 527285.

Assignments and Coursework
|
|
Students can hand in completed coursework and assignments to Mrs Carter who
will pass them on to the appropriate teachers.
To ensure a record is kept of student's work she will issue a receipt for
each piece of work handed in.
It is important to note that any work handed in after the deadline will be
marked only at the discretion of the subject teacher.

Monitoring Students' progress
|
|
We believe that monitoring students' progress not only helps to motivate students to
learn but also allows parents/guardians and teachers to provide appropriate support and
set realistic targets.
The Monitoring System consists of:
Review Sheets (formative)
This sheet is completed by all subject teachers and where necessary targets for future
progress are set. A copy of this sheet is given to parents/guardians and another
retained by the form tutor to provide the basis of discussion at one-to-one personal
development planning meetings between tutor and student. The review sheet will be issued
in November and January.
Subject Teacher / Parent Evening
Parents/guardians and subject teachers meet to discuss students' progress to date and set
targets for future attainment.
Home Study / Academic Monitoring Day
On 23rd January 2007 students will be asked to study at home. During the day an
appointment will be made for form tutors to meet parents/guardians to discuss students'
progress in all areas at college.
Summative Review Sheet
This report will be issued in April and will include comments on a student's attainment,
progress, behaviour and homework. Targets will be set to guide pupils as they prepare
for their exams.
