Key Stage 3
|
|
This year’s KS3 results are, again, outstanding. They outperform national, diocesan and
LA results. It appears that with disapplication, St Joseph’s will have the best KS3
results in the Authority.
This, as you will be aware, is the first year to see the impact of the Accelerated two
year KS3 programme. Both Year 9 and Year 8 took their SATs exams in May.
Nationally, there have been concerns regarding the lateness of marking, losing scripts
and non return of levels. St Joseph’s was very fortunate in that our only real problem
besides the late return of marks was the very late return of some scripts. The College
was eventually able to release the provisional results to students and parents in the
week beginning 15 September 2008.

| Maths | 80% Level 5+ | 55% Level 6+ |
| Science | 71% Level 5+ | 38% Level 6+ |

The figures for Year 8 are particularly of note. The 5+ levels in both English and Maths
are particularly good with Science appearing to perform less well. This is to do with
the greater amount of subject content that has to be covered in the two years. As
expected, there are less Level 6+ as the students covered the subjects in a third less
time.
The College has said many times that these results should be looked on as progress tests
that show where a student is at a particular point in time. These figures reflect the
considerable progress made by our students. The results would seem to justify the
College’s decision to move to a two year KS3, three year extended KS4 programme.

Key Stage 4
|
|
The College is very pleased with the KS4 results this year. These results need to be
looked at very carefully.
-
The first set of results are based on a cohort of 218 students, with the four
students (EAL) who started in November of Year 11 being disapplied.
| 5 A* - C | 66% |
| 5 A* - G | 95% |
| 5 A* - C (E&M) | 50% |
| % A* - C grades | 68% |
-
The second set of results are based on a cohort of 198 students who were educated
for the whole of KS4 at St Joseph’s. This does not include the twenty students
educated off site.
| 5 A* - C | 71% |
| 5 A* - G | 99% |
| 5 A* - C (E&M) | 56% |
-
The third set of results are based on a cohort of 176 students who were educated
for the whole of KS3 and KS4 at St Joseph’s.
| 5 A* - C | 74% |
| 5 A* - G | 99% |
| 5 A* - C (E&M) | 60% |
| % A* - C grades | 71% |
The different sets of results reflect the movement of students into the College over the
course of KS3 and KS4, and the differing programmes put in place in KS4 to meet the needs
of our students. Again, these results are better than national, diocesan results and are
amongst the best in Swindon.
A number of subjects saw significant improvement from the previous year. Art moved from
64% to 91% A* - C, Drama from 38% to 88% A* - C, Music from 46% to 80% A* - C, Italian
from 85% to 91% A* - C and ICT Double Award which achieved 83% and 88% A* - C. Other
subjects performed as expected, meeting FFT (Fisher Family Trust) targets, Geography
(68%), History (68%), French (88%), RE (83%), Engineering (83% and 74%) and Science (58%
and 61%). Only three subjects performed under 45% A* - C, Sports Studies, Health &
Social Care and Leisure & Tourism. English Language achieved 64% A* - C and Maths 64%
A* - C.
Re-marks have been requested in some subjects and results may well change.
It is work noting that the C.O.P.E. (Certificate of Personal Effectiveness) Level 2
Programme, delivered as part of Flexible Pathway continues to be a success with twenty
five students in total, achieving a Grade B GCSE.

|
Key Stage 5
|
|
The average points score per students is 196 with a 98% pass rate, 55% of students
achieved A – C grades.
Subjects showing added value were Business Studies, Sociology, Philosophy and Ethics,
History and Italian, with English, French, D&T, Health & Social Care and Media Studies
achieving a 100% pass rate. The new BTEC Sports Studies course was very successful with
three students achieving Distinctions and one a Merit. This confirms the decision made in
moving to the BTEC qualification. Significant percentage improvements were made in pass
rates in Chemistry and Biology.
I am happy to report that our students were able to claim their places at University with
the majority obtaining their first choice.

Level 2 Package
|
|
The Level 2 package is a St Joseph’s programme which allows students who enter the Sixth
Form with a few if any relevant qualifications. The majority of these are EAL students.
This one year programme allows students to access and then progress onto other recognised
courses at the end of Year 12.
Results have been good in the Personal Finance Level 2 with twelve out of fourteen
students passing the course and in Business English Level 2 with nine out of eleven
students achieving a pass. All ten students on the Business OCR course passed with two
students achieving Merits.
